CHAMPAGNE

Champagne is a sparkling white wine produced in the Champagne region of France with specific vineyard practices (Méthode Champenoise is the traditional method).
In most countries, it is illegal to officially label any product Champagne unless it both comes from the Champagne region and is produced under the rules
of the appellation.
The grapes used in the production of Champagne are black Pinot noir, Pinot Meunier and white Chardonnay. Champagne appellation only allows
grapes grown according to appellation rules in specifically designated plots within the appellation to be used in the production of Champagne.

Royalty became associated with Champagne in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.

CHÂTEAU DE CHAMBORD

Chambord is one of the most famous châteaux in the world because of its Renaissance architecture.
Largest château in the Loire Valley, Chambord was first built as a hunting lodge.
It was never intended to provide defense from enemies; the walls, towers and moat are only decorative.
Leonardo da Vinci may have been involved in its design and building.
The spectacular open double spiral staircase that is the centerpiece of the château is famous. The two spirals ascend the three floors without ever meeting.
The château is surrounded by a 13,000‑acre wooded park and game reserve maintained with red deer, enclosed by a 20‑mile wall.

D-DAY IN NORMANDY (JUNE 1944)

The Normandy landings (D-Day) which took place on June 6th, 1944, was the largest seaborne invasion in history. It began the liberation of German-occupied north-western Europe from Nazi control and contributed to the final victory. The weather on D-Day was bad but the organizers had requirements for the phase of the moon, the tides, and the time of day that meant only a few days in each month were suitable.  The amphibious landings were preceded by aerial and naval bombardment and the landing of 24,000 American, British, and Canadian airborne  troops. The men landed under heavy fire and the shore was mined.  German casualties on D-Day have been estimated at 4,000 to 9,000 men. Allied casualties were at least 10,000, with 4,414 confirmed dead.
